Dear Mr. Barker,

Thank you for contacting NRDC and sharing your concerns about drilling in the Baca Refuge. You can keep up to date on this issue and take action on our BioGems website: http://www.savebiogems.org/yellowstone/

You are absolutely right that population stabilization is important for long term environmental sustainability. Because of this, there are many groups that have made population studies their focus (you'll find links to some of these organizations at http://www.worldwatch.org/node/3943).

Many of our programs do touch on issues of population stabilization. As the best example of this, you may want to take a look at our web pages about promoting smart growth and averting sprawl (http://www.nrdc.org/cities/smartGrowth/).

Thank you again for taking the time to write to NRDC and sharing your thoughts and concerns.

Sincerely,

Dear Frances Beinecke,

Thank you for writing me the Bush administration is poised to allow two giant energy companies to drill exploratory oil and gas wells up to 14,000
feet beneath Colorado 's spectacular Baca National Wildlife Refuge.
It is obvious the paradigm; every form of life on this planet is struggling to survive, from the various flora and fauna at Baca NWR to Homo sapiens that is threatening to destroy it.  Humans are acting just like all other life, attempting to survive and thrive, including drilling for oil.
What do we do?  If we are intelligent enough to drill for oil we are smart enough not to.  Hybrid cars - we know they run on coal for electricity - but solar energy has become viable in recent months.
And we can practice family planning.  We are the only species ever to deliberately and consciously control our reproduction.  I have no children, and plan on having one child and adopt.  I want to leave this world a better place.

Thank you,
Daniel Barker

Dear Mr. Barker,
Thank you for contacting NRDC and sharing your concerns about the Peruvian rainforest, Wyoming ’s Red Desert , and other environmental issues. NRDC is currently working to protect the Tahuamanu Rainforest in Peru , which is one of our BioGems: http://www.savebiogems.org/tahuamanu/. You can take action on this site by sending a letter to the Peruvian government asking them to do their part to curtail illegal mahogany exports: http://www.nrdconline.org/campaign/biogems_tahuamanu_0407
In regards to what you can do to help, you are correct that solar energy is a good place to start. Small changes to our lifestyles, like switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs, recycling and composting, installing solar panels, being careful about electricity and water usage, and choosing a more environmentally-friendly car like a hybrid are all ways to help the environment. Remember that you can take action also by letting your Representatives, Senators, and other legislators know how you feel about certain issues that are important to you on our Action Fund website: http://www.nrdcactionfund.org/campaigns/mobilizing-america-for-our-environment.html

Subject: the price of freedom

NRDC

Dear concerned citizen,

I have realized for a while about your statement that the majority of Americans have no idea that purchasing these products they are driving the destruction of Peru 's rain forests and threatening the survival of vulnerable indigenous communities.
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, as the RSPCA and the Abolitionists learned in the nineteenth century.  Neither the government or business will ultimately protect our rights, it is our duty.
It is up to us to stop the loggers armed with guns.  It us up to us to bring this to the public attention.
People learn; I have never in my life seen any baby seal skin, so I know the market has been limited for more than fifty years to rare individuals, which means there is a strong boycott of clubbing baby seals.
What can I do to help?

Thanks for the questions, Daniel.

I theory, I am all for Sun Rail and for alternative forms of public transportation that will reduce our carbon footprint and make travel through Central Florida easier and less expensive.  Many of our residents work in the Disney area and would certainly benefit from this option.

I haven't heard too much being said lately about extending SUN Rail into Polk County.  I found this article:  http://polktpo.com/docs/librariesprovider2/tpo/sunrail-feasibility-study.pdf?sfvrsn=4

I am an advocate for low-cost public transportation and would be open to exploring this as an option.

Thanks for asking.

Letter: It’s time to live like you vote

First, I thank Polk County voters for doing their civic duty, a record turnout that will stand in history. I know the 12 state amendments went on forever and all except number one passed.

I call on Democrats to do in their daily lives how they vote: recycle, use public transit, when on vacation ride our nation’s train, use rechargeable batteries, eat as much meat as told by your doctor, use efficient lightbulbs.

I call on Republicans to do in their daily lives how they vote: run a business and pay employees a good wage and offer medical care, encourage foreigners living here to become Americans, encourage people to get educated for a better job and career, fight racism.

I call on other voters to live according to how they vote.

Florida has limited terms, and regardless how the vote turns out, I call on Gov. Rick Scott, win or lose, to campaign as he said for limited terms on Capitol Hill. The last memorable election was 1994′s “Contract with America” and part of the Republican Party’s pledge was limited terms in Washington

Hello Daniel,

Thank you so much for your email and your support of Earthjustice!

Thank you also for your insight and vigilance on these issues. We strongly encourage our supporters to reach out to their local representatives and get active with local environmental groups to help make change happen. In your case, I might suggest looking into local “rails to trails” groups and the International Council on Clean Transportation (http://www.theicct.org/). Earthjustice also focuses heavily on keeping fossil fuels in the ground and promoting the switch to clean energy, particularly solar. You can read more about that here: http://earthjustice.org/climate-and-energy/clean-energy. We are also working on building a more robust sustainable farming portfolio, and one of our attorneys has a wonderful blog on the subject, which you can read here: http://earthjustice.org/tags/fertile-grounds.

I hope this helps! Thank you again!

Best,
Ella

Bettny,

I moved to Lakeland between Tampa and Orlando in '02.  Clearly. we must be realistic!  More people, more money and income, means more goods shipped - and what do we do?
I propose a pragmatic approach - ask your fellow Floridians to consider the impact they are causing here.  My goal is to use less resources.  I have switched from incandescent to CFL to LED, and my iPod which I use is powered by USB.
Also, we do not even begin to look at the man in the mirror.  Let me count the ways.  We eat too much meat, and even eating meat on a regular basis uses more resources and oil than transit.  We throw away plastic without any regard it came from petroleum.  We continue to drive too much.
I propose working on promoting Amtrak, gradual shift to electric vehicle.  Also, change community so roads are designed for not just cars, allowing bicycles and others a way to end the madness of oil running amok.

What can I do?

Daniel,

Thank you so much for reaching out to your federal representative. It is with support from concerned citizens like you that we will be able to uphold laws protecting our precious natural resources -- such as drinking water -- from environmentally destructive policies and work toward a sustainable energy future.

Best,
Josh Eveleth

Dear sir,

I sent a copy of the letter to my Congressman about mountaintop coal mining.

I wrote her as Americans gradually shift from internal combustion vehicles to hybrids and electrics our demand for electricity will increase, and (as we all know) over our this nation's electricity comes from coal.

I wrote her it is important to protect our drinking water.

Thank you,
Daniel Barker
